Abstract

This paper reports a novel oil level detection technology which can quickly and accurately measure the oil/water interface. Due to the different dielectric constants of oil and water, a voltage signal differential amplification circuit and detection system are designed using electrical double layer(EDL) formed at the oil/water interface and zeta potential based on electrostatic induction principle. The zeta potential can induce a current when a metal electrode contacts the interface, and the induced current which reflects the contracts of the electrode with the interface can be detected by measuring current changes. According to the time of current pulse and the falling speed of the electrode, the position of the oil/water interface is determined. In addition, the amplitudes of the signal vary with the propertied of oil. Results show that the proposed method is simple and inexpensive without losing high accuracy and sensitivity, which can be applied to develop a portable device for infield application under some extreme circumstance.
