Wing-assisted vessel’s energy saving potential calculation on typical route

Abstract

A 49 000 DWT bulk carrier was chosen as the target vessel, and the force analysis for the target wingassisted vessel was carried out. The rigid wing with good aerodynamic performance was chosen as the assisted wing. The selected typical route was suitable to use assisted wing according to the relevant parameters record of the deck logbook and engine logbook. In the target route segment, wings’ assisted propulsion power was calculated in which the method of weighted average was adopted. It is calculated that the target vessel can save fuel oil from 6.19% to 9.59%, which indicates that the energy saving potential of the target vessel is huge.
