Abstract

Based on the seaworthiness characteristics of the waterways and the container ODflows between the riverside ports on the Yangtze River, this paper aimed to build an integer programming model so as to optimize container liner network on the Yangtze River by minimizing the total transport cost. The model can determine the shipping routes, the corresponding calling ports, calling sequences, the number and type of the used ships. In order to make the model usable, the paper formulated the waterway’s impedance function and designed a genetic algorithm based on FrankWolf method. In the optimized network, the big ships are used in the midstream of the River while the small ones are adopted on both ends of the River, which differs from the current ship allocation principle of small ones running in the upstream while the big ones running in other segments.
