Empty container reposition in liner alliance based on mutually renting strategy

In view of empty container reposition problem under liner alliance, this paper established a dynamic optimization model of empty container reposition for each stage in liner service based on empty container mutually renting strategy among liner alliance. It’s objective is to minimize the total cost of empty container reposition during a decisionmaking period considering comprehensively the influenced factors，such as empty container transportation, handling, renting and stockpiling cost, and a time related dynamic algorithm was aslo designed. The verified example results illustrate that the mutually renting strategy of empty container can realize the optimization of empty container reposition effectively among liner alliance. Furthermore, the amounts of empty container renting and repositioning under the mutually renting strategy can be less than that under the soly repositioning strategy for each liner. So that, it can realize empty container reposition and renting strategy for the liner at different ports and different voyage time.
