Abstract

In order to reduce the cost of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in Anion membrane fuel cell, carbon supported Co3O4/C was synthesized as ORR catalyst by ultrasonic method. The structure and morphology of Co3O4/C catalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The catalytic activity of the Co3O4/C catalysts for ORR was evaluated. Results show that catalyst exhibites better activity for ORR in alkaline solution. With Co3O4 content increasing in Co3O4/C, the catalytic activity increases first and then decreases. Thus there is an optimal content of Co3O4 , which is 50%. At this point, the polarized current density is 2.93 mA·cm-2(@-0.8V), the electron transfer number of oxygen reduction reaction is 2.51. Compared with the traditional method of preparation of Co3O4/C catalyst, the ultrasonic method used in this experiment is simple, with the lower cost and a higher activity of oxygen reduction. Therefore, this work can provide a facile method to obtain a Co3O4/C catalyst and it will have good prospect of application in anion membrane fuel cell cathode catalysts.
